error in compress

Hi,

I have a 11.23 server and when I do in some files s compress it returns me error.

#ls -l CIParch1_18457.dbf
-rw-r----- 1 oracip dba 20970496 Oct 27 18:45 CIParch1_18457.dbf

#compress CIParch1_18457.dbf
#echo $?
2

#ls -l CIParch1_18457.dbf
-rw-r----- 1 oracip dba 20970496 Oct 27 18:45 CIParch1_18457.dbf

Does anyone what is happening?

With which user this command is executed ?

Rights are restricted, 640 only...

Perhaps a problem with user used ?

Hi!

exit 2 means that it could not compress the files without using force.

Try adding the "-f" option, that might help.

Sometimes it really helps to actually use the man pages; I admit that is a radical concept. A "man compress" would have told you that:

These commands return the following values upon completion:

0 Completed successfully
2 Last file is larger after (attempted) compression
1 An error occurred

You would have also found that you could use the -f or -z option. The -z is actually better in that it does not actually force a compression when no compression or negative compression occurs.
