when sizing your system do not forget to calculate the resore time, it can happen that a vg goes corupted and restoring 10 gb wil take less time than 100 Gb, all depening on the backup maganim... and you max restore times...
No recommendation - just "Supported File and File System Sizes" - which are in the doc that Robert Jan provided ...

You can have file systems as big as allowed.

Recommended is up to you - depends on things like maybe LUN sizes provided by your SAN admin(s), etc...

Rgds...Geoff

Other than the limits due to the OS version some of this is personal preference.

Having hundreds of devices and/or filesytems is an administrative / DR nightmare

Having few really really big filesystems can also have an overhead issue.

My preference. Somewhere in the middle that works with the environment.

100 GB is nothing for HP-UX -- you can have 1000 GB if you want. But a filesystem is a collection of files and managing a filesystem is proportional to the quantity (and to a lesser extent, the size) of the files. A 500 GB filesystem is simple if the files are all 10 GB in size, but put several million small files in the 500 GB filesystem with no subdirectories and you have a nightmare (finding or listing files, backup speed, all slow).
