Here's what happened. I got onto the server from a laptop using hyperterminal - i think it was using vt100 settings but I'm not sure. I changed the IP address by changing the netconf in the /etc/rc.config.d to reflect the changes and the hosts file, too. When I rebooted, I found that I could reach the server via ssh but I didn't have my old password to log on as myself and root is barred from ssh. So I went back and tried to log in using hyperterminal and this time it said that X would not work and to hit CR to get a login prompt. I did this and it gave me a generic prompt at which i typed "root". It rejected this giving me the exact same prompt again. I'm stuck! Any help would be appreciated.

Whenever I try to login using "co" or console, I get a run of messages saying that DT login is broken but when I type in root at the console prompt it just gives me another prompt and never asks for password.

"co" command connects you from the MP to the console - no other way from there.

The serial connection to the console is not really network related - so the problem may be different.

Can you connect to the SMH?

http://your.server.name:2301

Nothing like smh on the unsupported 11.00 version.

From the GSP you should review the console log and search for errors while booting (CL command).

If you have no other user to logon and su - you may consider to bring the system down and start in single user mode.

Wow, I wasn't aware of SMH before - it's pretty cool. Thanks.

My server now indicates a hardware error, but I do have another server with the same problem (can't log in at console). Unfortunately, that server doesn't have SMH either. I am working with HP and will post a solution. Thanks to everyone for suggestions. If you have other ideas, they are most welcome.
