A couple conflicts here.

rp7420 is not Itanium ( rx7620 is )

Raid 1 is a simple mirror. You will need Mirror/UX to RAID1 this disk to the other. If you purchased 11.23 Enterprise you have it. If you purchased 11.23 OE ( base ) then you need to purchase Mirror/UX.

Let us know if you have the proper EOE (Enterprise Operating Environment ) and we can help with this.

There is also options if you choose to use VXvM ( veritas Volume Manager ) but in this case you also need the EOE OS or you have to purchase VXvM separately.

FYI, newer Itanium servers now come with SAS drive controllers. The controllers have built in simple RAID abilitlies.

I have a question about setting up raid 1 on my rp7420 itanium machine. The server has two internal 73GB hard drives with hpux 11.23 loaded on the primary drive. I want to set up raid 1 on this drive for fault tolerance. Can this be done without formatting the primary drive? Also, what third party tools would I use to set up raid?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

James.

Hello James,

First of all i would like to tell u that rp7420 is not a itanium machine.Bcoz All rp series machine comes under PA-RISC machine. If it is a rx7420 then it would be Itanium machine.

And if it is rx7420 then one thing is there that all new rx machines now-a-days are coming with SAS controller card. And also if there are 2 hard drives and one of them already got OS installed(primary) then it would be possible that another Hard Drive(secondary) will be in RAID 1 with primary.

So plz check out that. Are both in RAID-1 or not? (bcoz most of the time new rx machine coming with pre OS installed are having there hard drives in RAID-1 configuration)
:by going to

EFI BOOT MANAGER's(comes while booting) -->EFI shell Built in ->u will go to shell prompt and then type drvcfg -s i.e. SAS controller utility like this
shell>drvcfg -s --> then RAID properties -->2 tabs are there one is "view array" here u can check that if there are 2 disks and one is primary and other is secondary under "device status" column
and Second tab if any internal hard disk is left untouched means not having RAID -1 is "create IM volume" to create RAID-1.

If you will try to put any pair of disk in RAID -1 using "create IM volume" tab then it will first format the data of disks(in pair) which you are putting in RAID-1 and after that you can put them in RIAD-1.

So if they are not in RAID-1 and u don't want your os to lose then it will be better to go for LVM mirroring.

If u need further help then plz reply
ok
Bye for now.

MAK

Thanks for the replies. It is indeed an rx7620. The system doesn't recognize the command 'drvcfg'. When I boot the machine I hit a key to interrupt the boot process. It drops me into a shell 'HPUX>' but when I enter drvcfg it doesn't recognize the command. Am I in the right shell?

James.

I was able to enter the correct shell and enter the drvcfg -s command. But I don't see anything about raid. Here's how the main menu looks like:

LSI Logic Host Bus Adapters
Adapter PCI PCI PCI IRQ NVM LSI Logic
Bus Device Function Control
<53C1010-66 00 03 00> 0 Yes Enabled
<53C1010-66 00 03 01> 0 Yes Enabled
<53C1010-66 1D 01 00> 0 Yes Enabled
<53C1010-66 1D 01 01> 0 Yes Enabled
