Hello Mridul,

Thanks a lot for your speddy reply, i sincerly appreciate it.

I have checked the forum you have mentioned, but there are any log file which l could check manually to get the exact resaon for the error message, because some times the fbackup goes successfully with erro code =0 and sometimes it goes with errocode =2.
As far as my knowlege and the going through the forum page specified by you, I beleive it is a tape problem, is there any log file we can check.. and was would be best resolutin for the same.

thanks a lot for time you have spent .. I sincerly appreciate it.

As you mentioned sometimes it completed with exit code 0 successfully and sometimes doesn't.

What do you do to overcome if it exits with exit code 2 ?? or it automatically goes away at next backup??

Do you use the same tapes for taking backup or is it like u get different exit codes with different tape media?

How many time you have used the tape media, is should not corss 100 count, same can be checked using the following command:

echo "sel dev 10; info; wait; il"|/usr/sbin/cstm |grep "Tape Load Count:"

Try to narrow down the things by stricking out the possibilities the way I have mentioned.

Hello Mirdul,

To be honest i am very new to the setup. I have just taking control of the servers a a week back.. so i dont have much inputs.

Yes as we are taking a full backup daily, if the exit code= return 2 , i normally wait for the next full backup. there is a folder db_backup on the local system where the data is compressed and saved daily thats the reason in my second post i do a scp of that direcorty db_backup and move it on the other server. that server has a weekly full back up scheduled once a week

I am not sure what i need to do, is there a way where i can be sure that it is tape problem, the local backup team daily puts the tape in the drive at the specificed time to take the backups..

Please let me know if you woudl liek any other inputs for me

What I feel is that backup team will have a set of tapes for a week and they would be using a specified tape for a day. This was the reason I asked you for the tape. So there is a possibility that tape media for a particular day is not good or have been used more than 100 times.

Try running tape cleaning catridge and re-run the backup to check if it makes any difference.

Did you check the log mentioned above?

If it is a tape drive head problem either we can not find that from HPUX end but that is unlikely since some backups are completing successfully. There are chances that dust is there and causing some backups to fail.

Try these two things if you don't find anything in logs.
