Hi,

Business Copy Software uses array-based replication technologies and it requires the application down time only to sync the cloned copy .(Which would be less than 30 or even 15 minutes)
Once you synced the cloned copy you can start your application and backup will be running from the cloned copy of your VG. So the time it required to backup the data to the tapes is not going to affect your production

If am not wrong bussiness copy will work only with XP and EVA storages.

Hope this helps

regards
John

Dear all

We are having a raw database of 13 TB which runs on oracle 9.2 at present we are using esl712e tape library with lt03 drive and tape which nearly consumes 10 tapes and all the backup are taken using omni data protector 5.6

The raw VG are combined to form 40 images and size wise all the 10 images are distributed properly.even fine tuning has be done at data protector by increasing a block size form 6kb to 256 kb still backup is taking nearly 8 and half hours

can any one give me solution to reduce backup time or i should move to veritas netbackup

hi,

Looking at the problem from a different perspective, it would be more wise to implement RMAN with compression option and thus reduce the amount of data being backed up without compromising on recovery.

Just to mention that in Oracle 10g r2, you have compression, changed block tracking and incremental merge backup features that significantly improves on database backup.

Coming back to your issue, how are you backing up your oracle database?

revert!

kind regards
yogeeraj

first of all thanks yogeeraj

We are taking a cold backup of our raw oracle database its about 13TB its a OLTP so we do a Business copy form business copy which is a [reference database] from that we are taking backup

We thought of using RMAN but DBA said there is so much complexity involved at the time of restoration

we combined all the lv to equally sized image and take backup

Regarding oracle 10g the migration which is supposed to happen at coming month

hi,

>We thought of using RMAN but DBA said there is so much complexity involved at the time of restoration

This is not really true. If you go through the documentation, especially with 10g, it is really very simple for both backup and restore. Once adopted, you would never want to change afterwards...

Unfortunately, i do not have experience with Business copy.

Hope others will able to help you better. (or alternately you can also post this question in the "Management software and system tools" section of this forum found at: http://forums12.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/categoryhome.do?categoryId=251)

wish you all the best with your next migration to 10g (why not 11g???).

kind regards
yogeeraj
