autofs stands for automatic filesystem. HOw it works,is
you have a nfs'd filesyste defined as autofs. When a user on a client, who is allowed to mount this filesystem, cd's to the target directory, the filesystem is mounted.
very useful if you have multiple applications, and users only whish to use one at a time its very useful (cad cam area especially)

AutoFS can be thought of as the next generation of Automounter. They both provide the same basic purpose for the automatic mounting and unmounting of NFS filesystems. However, so of the functionality of AutoFS was so different from the basic Automounter that this product was given a different name. Aside from different configuration options and different variables in configuration files, the major difference between AutoFS and Automounter is that automounter is dependent on using symbolic links to point to mount points under /tmp_mnt while AutoFS provides the functionality of mounting the NFS filesystem at the defined mount point without the symbolic link.
