Remote use of HP Workstation

I would like to use a HP 9000/712/100 Workstation from a MAC, and let the workstation without display, keyboard and mouse.
Could somebody tell me, whether it is possible, and if yes, how to configure the workstation exactly.

You can only disconnect the monitor from the 712/100, if you disconnect the keyboard or the mouse, it will probably hang. I know for a fact that it will not boot.

Other than that you can use it from the MAC but you did not say how do you want to use it.

For simple text connections, you can use any telnet client to get to the 712.

Fox X-window connections you need to install on your MAC an X-window software and run it either in server mode or in display mode. There are several commercial X-winodw products available and some freeware or public domain ones.

I am running a CAD-software on the HP, and i would like to redirect it completely to the MAC. X-Windows is running on the MAC, and i can connect via rlogin to the hp.
If hp needs a keyboard for booting, is no problem.
I would like to know the configuration steps for the X-Window connection.
Can I use the keyboard of the MAC, if the x-connection works? Only the graphics to the MAC but using the HP keyboard makes no sense.

You can use your X-window sw on the mac to connect to the 712, run x-based apps (CAD) on the 712 and display on the MAC. Yes you will be using the MAC keayboard and mouse with the CAD display on the MAC.

All X-window SW are setup differently. Check your manual how to set up the connection and search in this forum for the X-window software that you are using for more help.

The configuration must be done on your MAC X-client software. You can simply try this. Telnet the HP workstation using the xclient on the MAC, issue the export DISPLAY= command to the MAC display and launch the appropriate software.

Thank you so far.
The MAC has his native X-software, I can look for help in docu and in fores. My problem is the hp-side, I have no experience with hp-ux in this connect. In which conf-file which line have to be changed how, to redirect the graphics from the beginning to the MAC.

hi again,

as i mention above, nothing specific to configure on the HP host. Just to keep it simple. perform the following steps:
1. Logon to the MAC
2. telnet the HP workstation
3. export DISPLAY=<...>
4. Launch the application

hi again,

if case you get the following error message:
e.g.
$ xclock
Xlib: connection to "192.xx.xx.xx:0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server
Error: Can't open display: 192.xx.xx.xx:0.0
$

As root user, execute the following command:
e.g.
# xhost +
access control disabled, clients can connect from any host

and retry

I open my Xterm on the MAC, login via telnet as root, say
export DISPLAY=192.168.0.3
then
xhost +
the answer is
xhost: unable to open display "192.168.0.3"

the same result with 192.168.0.3:0.0

??

Starting a new telnet session i get 8 times the line

xset: unable to open display ""

it is because I redirected to a nonfunctional display?

how to reset to the original status?

Now I managed it so far, that I can start xclock.
The graphics-driver part of my CAD doesn't work over the X connection (it says "unable to find suitable Visual"), but it is no hp-problem now.

If you have a windows-based station, can you try to download a x-windows manager (e.g. x-manager) and try to do the same?

You will then be able to determine whether there need to be fix at the CAD software level or the MAC x-windows environment

now I can run SAM on my MAC
Via NFS is the whole disk of the hp accessable from the MAC

The CAD is still not redirectable

Can I redirect the System-Display itself (and not only for an appl.) to the MAC? I mean modifying an RC file or something like this, to get the X link from the very beginning of the startup active, and see on the MAC the HP-VUE . In this case would the CAD application probably not see any difference.

PS. A KMU switch plugged to the hp allows me booting and startup without monitor, keyboard and mouse.I would like to have the whole display-activity on the MAC, the only active connection to outside of the hp is the Ethernet

If the X server on the Mac doesn't offer a
suitable Visual, then I would not expect
anything to change if you run more HP-VUE
(which is probably possible, but I don't know
the details on setting it up).

"xdpyinfo" should tell you what the X server
provides. This may depend on the hardware,
as well as the Mac's display settings. You
would, of course, need to find out what "CAD"
expects to use, too.

The MAC xterminal responds to "xdpyinfo" with a list of 42(hex) different visuals.

How can i generate a new visual?

On the other side it means, that other applications (like SAM e.g.) find a suitable visual.
Do the apps search all the offered visuals to find a suitable?
Does a visual define only the things specified in the mentioned list (class TrueColor, depth:24 planes,colormap entries: 256, red gree blue masks and significant bits in color spec)?

There may be X server options which affect
this. I assume that the graphics hardware
matters, too. (The X server probably
wouldn't offer a 24-plane TrueColor visual
option for an 8-plane graphics card, for
example.)

"CAD" documentation?

I haven't done any X programming since about
1992, and I didn't do much then, so I never
did know much about the color stuff, and I've
probably forgotten most of what I did know,
but ...

I have seen cases where (old) applications
expected to find 8-plane color maps, and
could not cope with the 24-plane (or bigger)
color capability of more modern systems. You
haven't mentioned any software versions
(HP-UX, Mac OS, and so on), but I'd infer
from "712/100" that we're not talking about
the latest stuff here. From a quick look at
the "Technical Reference Manual" for "Model
712 (SYSTEM)", I'd guess that:

System Board Graphics
The Model 712 workstation comes with 8-bit color, 1024 by 768 resolution graphics. With use
of an optional video RAM (VRAM) daughter card (HP A4025A), the graphics resolution can
be increased to 1280 by 1024. [...]

So, any CAD software for that system may have
been expecting only 8-plane color.

Around here (Mac OS 10.4.11, X11 1.1.3 -
XFree86 4.4.0), in the "X11 | Preferences...
| Output" control, there's a Colors option,
which does include "256 Colors". You might
try playing with that to see if it helps.
