      <description>When is a port open?&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;If "somebody" is listening to that port and waits for incoming connections.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Regarding ftp - this is started by the inetd - to disable edit the /etc/inetd.conf file and disable the ftp line. Now re-read the inetd config&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;# inetd -c&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;To secure your system you can also use bastille.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;A href="http://h20392.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=B6849AA" target="_blank"&gt;http://h20392.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=B6849AA&lt;/A&gt;</description>

      <description>Zenus,&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Like Torsten said you can disable the ftp in /etc/inet.conf. You will need some other file transfer protocal if you want to copy files to other server. You can use SFTP if you have ssh installed.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;sp,</description>

      <description>you may run &lt;BR /&gt;#netswtat -an|more&lt;BR /&gt;   to see which ports are opened or extablished.or you can run tcpdump to see the which ports are open.</description>
