Shalom,

HP-UX 11.31 does not even install CDE by default.

/sbin/init.d/xfs start

If that fixes it, change /etc/rc.config.d/xfs to make the change permanent.
Hi All,
I am running HP 11. when booting up everything seems correct, until the machine tries to go in to CDE mode. It tries ,the nI get a message something like "Xserver could not start. could not start hpserv02:0 display". then it goes back t othe login screen, and keeps toggling back and fourth.
i apologize I do nto have the exact error message as I have left the facility for the day as it is midnight here in Taiwan. any ideas? i have seen CDE not start up and toggle between tries because of host name and IP not resolving, but htis does not seem to be the case.

I would appreciate any ideas any one has.

Thanks,

Phil
Could be a number of things. Here's a couple to check out:

1. Resolution not solid. Do nslookup by IP and name to ensure reverse works ok.
2. Network card needs to be reset. Check and ensure the speed is right for the card and port.
3. Someone has a remote login that isn't quite right. Check /etc/dt/config/Xserver and rem out any remote connections.
4. File permissions...confirm that /tmp has been set right and that /etc/hosts permission is set with enough rights too.

OK...here's a couple to try. Go into single user mode.
I'm sure others will think of more...but this should help get you started. Or do a search here for "CDE not starting" - you'll find plenty of things to try.

Rgrds,
Rita
