performance analysis tool

Hi,

We have around 100 HP servers in our environment. We would like to do performance analysis for all the servers..Below are my queries regarding this..

1. Do we have any software tool from HP(other than native tools like sar,glance etc..)for performance analysis(cpu,memory etc..)..?
2. Is it possible to see all the server performance from a single server..?
3. ANy options to look for historical data..(store performance data for a week)..?
4. Any free software/trail version available for this..?

Points will be allotted..

u can use glance but it is not a free product

Do you see mideamon running as a process? If so, it is collecting data for you already. However, since you don't have glance, it may no t be there. Also, there is a trial version of glance on your applications install CD for your OS version that you are on. It runs for 30 days. If you install this, it will install the midaemon your system, and configure it, and start it running. And, after 30 days, even though Glance won't come up, I think the midaemon will continue to collect data. So, you'd only be able to examine data from the "extract" command.

If so, you can get at the data, and output it using the "extract" command, which would be installed as part the Glance install (/opt/perf/bin/extract).

Keep in mind however, Glance is a great tool, and I have it all of my servers. I don't think it would be a big deal to get a package deal price for 100 servers on a single purchase, making it much more affordable.

That being said - I've heard that HP is moving to some new tool for getting and reporting performance data (no longer Glance), but I am not familiar with it.

Performance analysis on HPUX systems is not a trivial process. There are attempts to make free tools but they fall too short of providing any valuable results. In our environment, we have used a highly customized version of statmon tool, but since the person who customized it has left before I join the organization, I do not have much info on it.

Lately, server performance and monitoring were becoming a big issue. My company has gone ahead and purchased the OpenView monitoring for the data center. We also licensed the Performance Insight (PI) option for it. As far as I can see, it generates quite good results in graphics format, which a sysadmin can use to get information about his/her system, where, at the same time, the graphs, can be shown to the big-wigs, to justify additional hardware purchase etc. It is by no means cheap, but if you are trying to squeeze every drop of power from a given server, I think the licensing cost is easily justified by the savings it will bring by not buying unnecessary hardware.

Nagios, as a monitoring tool is free. But it might not work in Itanium systems.

Given the amount of servers that you have my recommendation is to go with Open View, itÂ´s not cheap, you might need a consultant to implement it, but it works :-)

You might want to call your reseller to get more information on it.

If you are worried about application performance, on Integrity HP-UX there is caliper that you can download.

The Openview option is a good one but does cost more than some other options.

If you have the performance agent OVPA on your servers you can collect and report on data with OVPI. It has good trending of data and lots of other options. As well it allows you to store data for historical analysis.

But I've found OVPI is more than some people need. A less powerful product is Openview Reporter.

Reporter can be installed on a Windows server. Which you configure to poll the OVPA agents and store data for historical analysis (OVPI does this too). But Reporter has a simpler database and is cheaper...but is not as robust as OVPI.

You get what you pay for :)

Reporter can be downloaded as a 30 day trial as well.
