Hello,

sounds you have just trurned on the wrong feature by
hitting on of the 8 functions keys...
Press "System/Menu" until you see the 8 function keys
labels on the bottom of the screen.
Look for the labels: an asterisk means "turned on".
Can you find a label like "echo *" or so? You might have
to press "F8" (Setup...) first, to see it.
When you find it, press that function key again, and the
asterisk should vanish. Now press the "Save" key (F1,
IIRC), and then you should be fine.

HTH,
Wodisch

I am new to the HP-UX world, mostly I had worked with SCO Unix, and recently the main console on the HP got locked. To get out I ended up killing the session from another terminal, but by doing so I also did something to the terminal.

Now, every time I try to log into the console, the password is also echoed on it, what can I do to return it to normal condition? I can't reboot the system yet because I am at a call center.

sounds like the console config has been affected. What type is it?
Is it something like an HP 700/92 or 96?
If so, turn off the power to the console, hold the "d" key down and while holding it down power it back on.
Release the d key after about 10-12 seconds, and the terminal should then display something like "Default Configs Used" in the lower left hand side.
Hit the Return key, and that should fix the issue.

Melvyn,

Will this only affect the console and not other terminals? I don't want to affect user's sessions by doing this. As I mentioned, I am not familiar with the HP-UX console. This is a HP-UX 9000, the console is a 700/96.

If this will not affect any other processes, I will try it right away, after I get some kind of confirmation from you. Thanks.

Looks like your "local echo" option might have got turned on on your console. Press F8 (I think) that says "config keys", then select Terminal Config and then press F2 (??) default configuration and then save the configuration (F1?). You should get rid of this problem.

-Sri

Melvyn, I did not get a chance to try your solution, and I was a little hesitant about it, but maybe next time that might resolve some other issues I may face in the future. Anyway, I'll be here every once in a while to be helped and be of help if necessary, as my experience grows I hope I can provide some good advice too.

Right now, Wodisch and Sridhar Bhaskarla provided me with the most helpful hints, and I decided to give each a few points. Although it was not the "echo" option that was on, you two gave me the insight about how to navigate through the Menu keys (a new thing to me in this environment) and then find an option that was on and should've not been (almost like changing the BIOS). This option was under "modes" --> "Modify All", I guess I turned it on by mistake. Thanks you all, it was a good little piece of knowledge.

MAD
