Problem with detecting DVD drive on HP-UX server

I have a production HP-UX server. OS is 11.11

It has one tape drive & one DVD-RW drive installed. Drivers for both are installed and also checked thru SAM in peripheral devices. They are correct. However the DVD drive is not getting detected by ioscan -fnCdisk

But it's not a hardware issue, as the same DVD drive works fine on another HP-UX 11.11 server box. Also when the tape drive is replaced in the same SCSI slot of DVD drive, that's too get detected & works fine....

It's issue with detection of DVD drive only....and I think it's something related to any missing DVD-hardware related patch

Any clue ?

What happens if you scan the path with ioscan -H?

When I do:-

server1:/tmp# ioscan -fnCdisk | grep -i DVD

I get no output.

But when I have run same command on the another server named server2 (server1 & server2 are in cluster)

I get following output:-

server2:/#ioscan -fnCdisk | grep -i dvd
disk 100 3/0/1/0/0.3.0 sdisk CLAIMED DEVICE _NEC DVD+RW ND-2100AD

Look at my ioscan:

It is a DVD, but not called DVD in the name string.

And what happens if you look at the particular path of the DVD device? Grepping on DVD will not work if the description doesn't contain DVD.

OK.... Now its clear that, ur DVD drive is not get detected. May be the DVD drive issue or the Slot issue.
You can confirm by doing the following...
Conect (refix) the DVD in ur sever.
Run simple ioscan
#ioscan
#insf
Then see whether its got detected??
One more dbt? Was this DVD drive working in this server. Is this is a fresh DVD drive then check the h/w compactability also

I done following steps along with insf and ioscan commands:-
1) replaced DVD drive wth tape drive; tape drive got detected. Hence there is no slot issue.

2) replaced this DVD drive with another working DVD drive from another server; not getting detected.

3) tried this DVD drive to another working server, it got detected there. means DVD drive is also working fime

So it means server1 is not allowing DVD drive only....is it some DVD H/W related patch issue.. ?

Can you post the DVD model information?

Also when you attach a tape drive in the slot where you are trying to attach the DVD drive, what is the hardware path it shows up as?

If you can see the tape drive then you must be able to figure out what the path is. Scan that path using "ioscan -fnH" and report the results.

OK, I'll try one last time.

With the DVD drive installed in place of the tape drive, what does "ioscan -fnH 6/0/1/0/0.3.0" return?

Is the chassis a tapearray 5300?

A bent pin on the cable can produce very strange results - check this.

hi,

what is the scsi id of the tape drive? you may simply just have a conflict.

check on the other server if you dont know and then check the hardware path to make sure that there is nothing with the same ID.

id it is a 5300 box then check the terminators on the back! a bad terminator would cause this.
(We had a customer who replaced the tape drive and cable in one, followed by the whole ta5300 chassis only to find afterwards it was just the terminator gone bad)

but do a full ioscan when just connected first, to force a new scan of the hardware not a cached one.

try removing the device files generated from insf when the tape device was connected using :

rmsf -H 6/0/1/0/0.1.0

and then connect the DVD drive and run insf again
