Hi Mathias,

Server will be gracefully shutdown upon reaching high temperature.

Regards,
Asif Sharif

Hi Mathias,

the diagnostic will "watch" the sensor (see envd) and will send a warning to you and syslog if the temp. is critical. If still raising, the server will shutdown, if still getting higher, it will be powered off.

Thanks for your reply.

I checked my syslog and find the following:

Nov 5 01:04:43 pollux /usr/sbin/envd[1726]: Temperature exceeded the normal operation threshold. Correct the over-temperature condition.
Nov  5 01:04:44 pollux EMS [2143]: ------ EMS Event Notification ------   Value: "MAJORWARNING (3)" for Resource: "/system/events/ia64_corehw/core_hw"     (Threshold:  >= " 3")    Execute the following command to obtain event details:   /opt/resmon/bin/resdata -R 140443665 -r /system/events/ia64_corehw/core_hw -n 140443649 -a

However, do you know how can I send a email?

Note that modern HP servers will protect themselves from high temperatures. As long as you have no external disks, tape drives or networking equipment in the room, the server will shut itself down after reaching the critical over-temp condition. However, if you do not have separate protection for the room, your computer will be fine but all your external disks and other devices will be destroyed. Do not use computers as temperature sensors. Protect the entire room with backup cooling and excess temperature shutdown. Computer rooms are extremely vulnerable to overheating because they usually create a lot of heat and if the air stops, the entire room can rise dozens of degrees in a few minutes. Losses due to heat damaged equipment can be massive.
