It depends.

In some interviews I have been asked specific unix questions, and in others I have not.

Just be prepared to answer questions about HP-UX. The level of the questions may depend on the job you apply for.

If you don't know an answer, you could explain how you would go about finding the answer.

It really depends. A good interviewer will not always ask direct specific questions like how do you check the status of a SG cluster. But they will build this in to a scenario, and ask you for examples, of what problems you faced and how you fixed them.

Anyone can remember a list of commands, but they should be looking for examples of what experience you have on your CV.

The questions may also try to nail-down how good one might be with details. For example, when you ask (allcaps downshifted per previous comments) "in HP interview" do you mean an interview for a position with HP the company, or do you mean an interview for an HP-UX admin position (as has been assumed thusfar)

Hello,

You already got some good advice.

These days, well-adjusted interviwers will
not ask very technical questions. Instead,
the emphasis is on two elements:

a) Can a person work in a team (friendly,
sharing information, and so on),

b) Can a person adapt to ever-changing IT
environments

In my time, I have seen some very
knowledgeable Unix admins who failed
in the industry due to their introvert
characters and inability to work in teams.

And here is one real question from
an interview:

A person types the following string
into the web browser:

http://www

What happens next?

Apparently, this question is asked
by number of companies :)

If you think carefully, the answer needs
to include references to hostname
resolution, DNS, other types of
databases (like WINS, LDPA, NIS, NIS+),
routing, default domain, and much more.

As students in schools tend to say:
"the question is easy, but the answer
is too hard" :)

here i provide some question which i collected through this forum i d like to share with u..

"what is ____, and what is it used for?" with:
tar
cpio
whois
finger
bind
mount
fsck
ping
ifconfig
inetd
smbd

...and pretty much anything else you're looking for.

You can get specific with command-line arguments or file formats if you have specific requirements for the position - for example, "What is the meaning of the 3rd field in the /etc/passwd file?" (answer: user id)

The technical interview included the following subjects:
* being able to work with files responsible for network.
* describe the steps to compile linux kernel.
* how do you setup nis domain.
* how do you setup dhcp server in order for it's clients to be able to load boot image.
* netapp appliance familiarity.
* Kickstart familiarity.
* Jumpstart server in Solaris familiarity.
* bash and/or perl scripts.
* DNS setup and maintenance.

Here is few question that can help evaluating the skills :

1) Describe the boot sequence of a Linux system , or hp-ux system.?

2) How a system gets the default runlevel.?

3) What is the difference between init s , and init S. ?

4) How do you calculate the free space available , to increase/extend a filesystem.?

5) What is the procedure to mirror the root disk?

6) How to set kernel parameter from command line.?

7) What to do , if the newly build kernel doesnot boot.?

8) How to make sure if the patch going to install will take a system reboot.?

9) How to extend a filesystem online ?

10) Can you reduce filesystem size? If yes , how? Any risk ?

11) How to measure performance of a system , if the connected users are saying server performance is very slow ?

12) How many entry can be added in resolv.conf?

13) what is the command to see the default gateway?

14) How to sort as per the uid , from /etc/passwd file.?

15) A server is rebooted and came up, but you dont know if its planned or unplanned , how to check about it ?

16) How to find 10 largest file in the filesystem /user/sap/trans ?

17) How to check the error logs in the system.?

18) How to add a printer in the system?

19) How to write a function within a shell script?

20) How to disable the ftp service in the system?

21) How to multiply two numeric value , from the command prompt and to get the result. ( ex: 12 * 15 Result to be display = 180 ). ?

in L2 and L3 position you have to have much bit need to know more than a conventional system administrators.

Must knowledge on networking, ARPA services, Business continuity, Storage systems, backup sysetms, HA, Security and much more troubleshooting experience will be lead you for that position.

but above that conditioned will apply in sense of the employer and the position.
