Installation Media - ACE??

I need to upgrade from 10.20 to 11.00. I have searched for the media and have only found the ACE (Additional Core Enhancements) CD. This seems to have the Core on, and it says INSTALL on the front - is this the correct CD?

Darren, when you say upgrade, I hope you mean you are going to install 11.00 and not attempt to "upgrade" from 10.20. If you attempt to upgrade, your chances of success are ==> "rapidly approaches zero".

You have "A" correct cd, but the date is very important, what date is on it?

Make sure you take TWO make_recovery's of your system, and TWO backups of your "other" filesystems.

I was going to Upgrade following the upgrade guide! I have a lot of oracle databases etc. that I don't want to lose! Why are my chances so slim? What pitfalls should I watch out for? And how do I make these system backups?

You chances are very close to nil. Are your Oracle databases on other Volume Groups?? If so, you can "export" those volume groups, and simply "import" them after the install of 11.00.

Hi Darren:

I'd opt for a cold install over and upgrade. You have the opportunity to resize your filesystems to your tastes, and you will be guaranteed to end up with a successful, clean installation.

The CDROM titled "hp-ux 11.0 install/update/recovery" also bears the note "core os with additional core enhancements". The latest version I have is for July 2001 (#5012-7982). This, or an similar version, along with the current Quality Pack (QPK) bundle (which supersedes the "GR" packaging) is what you want for a full, cold, install of 11.0. You should also obtain a current set of Application CDROMs, of course.

Do you have ignite installed for 10.20? Look to see if you have /opt/ignite.

Check to see if you have "make_recovery" on your system, using

find / -type f -name make_recovery

If not, install it from your 10.20 cd's.

To do a make_recovery, starting as root:

make_recovery -Av -d /dev/rmt/tapedrivenamehere

I think I will go for a cold install then.
Few questions:
I have backups of all my other volume groups,
can I simply restore these after the install?
Is there a good install guide around?
Anything I need to be careful of?

Hi Darren:

To handle your non-vg00 volume groups (which will remain untouched by a cold installation) you will want to 'vgexport' and 'vgimport' them. Using vg02 as an example:

Before the cold install:

# vgchange -a n /dev/vg02
# vgexport -m /tmp/jrfvg03.mapfile -v -f /tmp/vg02.oldpaths /dev/vg02

After the cold install:

# mkdir /dev/vg02
# mknod /dev/vg02/group c 64 0x020000
# vgimport -m /tmp/vg02.mapfile -v -f /tmp/vg02.newpaths /dev/vg02
# vgchange -a y /dev/vg02
# vgcfgbackup /dev/vg02

Note the the "oldpaths" will not necessarily be the same as the "newpaths". I simply capture the old ones during the export as a convenient template to *edit* if necessary and use as the new ones to the 'vgimport'.

The use of the mapfiles option allows the 'vgimport' to create logical volume devices files under the vg_name directory using the naming convention given in the mapfile as opposed to the default naming convention used by a 'lvcreate'.

BTW:

Get a current version of Ignite from here:

...and having done so, use the 'make_tape_recovery' command for your Ignite backup of vg00:

# make_tape_recovery -x inc_entire=vg00 -I -v -a /dev/rmt/0mn
