topic SAN in Operating System - HP-UX

OK, I just came back from a SAN seminar and got overloaded with information about SAN. Are there any success stories out there? Can anyone recommend some good sites about case studies? I know this is a loaded question but I don't know where to start. I don't want to call vendors yet - I want unbiased comments. (I welcome non-success comments as well.)

Tony

Cheryl, I cannot find this document. Can you give me more information. Do you know of some success stories of using a SAN solution on HP yourself?

Anthony,

This field is out of my range of expertise.

The Knowledge Base document I referred to says that the SAN (Storage Area Network) Manager is supported on 10.20 only, except for DIAL and Application Host Filesets. The reason for this is the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) has sluggish performance at 11.00. This document was written in February 2000, so this is fairly current information.

I referred to the document in case operating system version is an important factor in your decision.

SAN is supported by HP's Openview team. For more exposure to this message, I would repost this in the Openview Forum, under Networking and Openview. You may get more hits there.

Best Wishes,
Cheryl

We have been running a successful SAN now for two years now. We have 20+ HP hosts connected via FC to configurable hubs in Arbitrated loop mode to over 2 TB of SAN attached HDS 7700E disk and two StorageTek DLT tape libraries. This config works well and we have reaped many benefits. We intend to convert to a fabric environment within the next year as support has now become available for HP hosts.
We have also setup a SAN for our NT environment which is in fabric mode, using brocade switches, HDS 7700E disk and STK Tape librairies, the benefits there were even larger then in the HP world.
Some good info can be found at the following sites;

http://www.fibrechannel.com/
http://www.brocade.com/
http://www.storagesearch.com/
http://www.stortek.com/
http://www.hds.com/
Peter, how big was your pipeline before SAN? How large was it after? I have been told that with Fibre Channel it can be as large as 100MB/sec (200MB/sec full duplex). Do you achieve this throughput? What Data Mover are you running on the SAN to manage data flow? Legato has one called Celestra that we are considering. Are you using a mix of private loops and public loops with all your Fibre Channel devices? I understand that HP-UX only supports private loop devices.

Thanks in advance for your time.

Tony
