From the TKB:

What is the meaning of: "vmunix: error of in_pcbsetaddr 227"?
DocId: KBRC00004392
Updated: 10/30/00 9:26:00 AM

PROBLEM
The following error message displays in /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log:
Oct 12 17:06:02 mims2 vmunix: error of in_pcbsetaddr 227 What does it mean?

RESOLUTION
This message indicates that /tmp or /var/tmp directory is missing.

Check for the directories, the correct owner, group and permissions:

# ll -d /tmp /var/tmp
drwxrwxrwx 30 bin bin 4096 Oct 17 20:45 /tmp
drwxrwxrwx 11 bin bin 5120 Oct 18 08:56 /var/tmp

If /tmp or /var/tmp is missing, recreate the directory:

# mkdir /tmp

OR

# mkdir /var/tmp

Reboot the system as soon as possible to complete the process.
# shutdown -r

The message can also indicate a problem with a LAN controller/interface.

Explanation: Packets sent over UDP sockets, such as used by routed(8), get stamped with the wrong "from" address. This is because in_pcbsetaddr() is calling ifa_ifwithdstaddr() with the socket address it is looking for, instead of a socket address with a zero port number.

If the LAN controller/interface has a problem, these addresses will be incorrect, which produces the error messages in syslog.

Just wanted to add another thing,

its always better to have the sticky bit on for /var/tmp and /tmp rather than plain 777 permissions

chmod 1777 /tmp
chmod 1777 /var/tmp

-Regards
Ramesh
