I am trying to cold install HP-UX 11.00.
I startup the box, insert media and stop it at the boot menu.
When I try and boot from alternative media it says "Failed to Initialize"
Any reason for this? I have checked the path using the SEARCH command and the alt path is correct.
The CD light does flicker as well.
Help me.

Hi,

Have you tried another media? The CD may not be able to read.

And if you're doing a cold install, why are you stopping it at the boot menu? (Racking my brain to try and remember the process of cold install). Doesn't the CD just take you into the install menu automatically?

James

Hi Darren,

Try with the path in the bo string in place of the alt word. use bo path_to_cdrom.

Also change the media and try. Don't see any reason why the system should not boot from the CD. Is the systems supported under 11.0.

http://docs.hp.com/cgi-bin/fsearch/framedisplay?top=/hpux/onlinedocs/5971-0642/5971-0642_top.html&con=/hpux/onlinedocs/5971-0642/00/00/6-con.html&toc=/hpux/onlinedocs/5971-0642/00/00/6-toc.html&searchterms=Supported%20Systems%20&queryid=20011025-064334

Hope this helps.

thanks
Darren,

The CD is not sequential. The sequential device will be the tape drive. The cd will be a random access device. Check your path again.

...jcd...

And it will most likely have a SCSI address of 2. Industry standards call for boot disk at 6, tape drive at 0 and CD-ROM at 2.

Have you tried to start the install with 'boot alt install' command? Or just 'boot alt'? You need the install string added to install off the cd.

John
