backup problem on tape library

Hi,

whem i put fbackup -f /dev/rmt/0m -i /backupfup this command, i got this error output file /dev/rmt/3mn is not a valid device file for backup.

Can any one help me in this issue??

Whay have you started 2 seperate thereads for the same issue? One of these will probably get deleted by an admin.

Can you confirm that you definately entered

fbackup -f /dev/rmt/0m -i /backupfup

and that the command responded by complaining about /dev/rmt/3mn ?

You haven't just eneterd a typo there??

fbackup doesn't support "no-rewind on close" tape devices, so you should never use /dev/rmt/3mn or /dev/rmt/0mn - you should use /dev/rmt/3m or /dev/rmt/0m (or whatever rewind-on-close tape device you have).

Of course you can have more issues with rewind-on-close tape devices if the kernel parameter st_san_safe is set to 1.

How about your OS version and patch level?

Is your system really able to handle a LTO-4 (driver!)?

Did this ever work?

u can see by doing again an

#ioscan -fnCtape
#insf
#insf -e

just again can u check that stape module though this driver is there in the system , can u still check one thing?

#kcmodule | grep -i stape and post the O/P?

u can see also by doing a rewind and see if tape loads and status.

#mt -t /dev/rmt/3mn rewind
#mt -t /dev/rmt/3mn status

also what if u are trying to take a tar backup on the tape?

#tar cvf /dev/rmt/3mn /tmp

what does this show???

Also one thing , this seems to be an FC Tape ,

can u also confirm that u have schgr properly driver installed in the system?

#kcmodule | grep -i stape
#kcmodule | grep -i schgr

If this is an 11.31 system try making the following cimmand, this shall install all the pass through drivers for all the HW reqd.
#mksf -p
the corresponding drivers shall be estape and eschgr in 11iv3

the "single" patch will be a depot file. installation doesn't vary.

Yes, You can follow

step1:- ftp the patch files to /tmp/PHSS_3XXX
step2:- cd /tmp/PHSS_3XXX
step3:- sh PHSS_3XXX
this will extract the depot.files
step4:- swinstall -s /tmp/PHSS_3XXX.depot

You r trying to take backup of data on Tape Library through "fbackup" command.

Now,
1).Have you inserted the media into the LTO, if yes how, because the media will be formatted and loaded by the auto loader.

2). Are you using Data Protector in your enviorenment.

3). What is the model of Tape Library.

hi nazmul,

just to make the things clear....

1) after u loaded thetape into the drive manually just run the following coammnds to check that the media is present in the drive that u will use for the backup.

say u load a tape in the drive.

after that

#mt -t /dev/rmt/3mn rewind
#mt -t /dev/rmt/3mn status

if the status shows that the media is online, just try a simple tar Backup a small one and see what happens.

#tar cvf /dev/rmt/3mn /tmp

ans see that ur tar backup is OK aor not atleast.

as far installing a single patch is concerned like the patch Torsten has mentioned.

just click on the link that Torsten Mentioned andselest and download that patch

click on the "Expand to see donload Option:"
and choose as a gzip package.

then download, this shall get downloaded a .tgz file.

make a directory say patch inside /tmp on the server.
ftp to the server in binary mode and put this file in say /tmp/patch directory.

then
on the server:

logon as root.

# pwd
/tmp/patch

# gunzip hpux__11.11_01170743.tgz
# ll
