CDE Login works but hangs on the Welcome Screen

Hi

I wonder if anyone has had this problem before

Basically I have two systems one an itanium running 11iv3 (which I had to install the CDE environment)and a PA-RISC based system running 11iv1

Both of which I can get the login screen up using reflections x but when I login all I get is the Copyright screen etc and it just sits there.

I have removed all my .dt files just to make sure I didn't have any original corrupt files to no avail

Shalom,

All the .dt files need to be there and be owned by the user logging down.

See that the font server is running, /sbin/init.d/xfs start

Review /etc/rc.config.d/xfs and make sure the font server is set to run.

check these steps

Enable CDE

/usr/dt/bin/dtconfig -e

Ensure the initdefault level in /etc/inittab is 3

If the system is not currently at runlevel 3, execute

init 3

start CDE

/sbin/init.d/dtlogin.rc start

If you intend to use HP-UX Xserver, update the following HP-UX 11.31 OS Patch as well:

PHSS_36123 Xserver cumulative patch

I have tried all of the above to no avail

I have even installed the product on two other systems and these worked fine first time around so it makes me think that there is some sort of corruption on the two systems

I even restored my existing .dt and .dtprofile from a system I know to work and this makes no difference

Look in /var/dt/Xerrors for any clues.

Check the ownership of the home directory and all it's contents.

This install put the setting in so I'm not too sure why it's reporting faults

I can change some but I think this is defeating the object - I will run it against the other Itanium 11iv3 which works and compare

So you are able to login.
Hence you are getting the GUI here

So the issue is with GUI login

Have you tried to login by creating a new user ?

Check the startlog file which reside in the home directory of the user
This will provide you the hints on wat is happening after you login via GUI

Also check if you are able to login via root
Also check if you have nsswitch.conf file
Also it this an NIS setup ?? Why am I asking is that if it hangs on Copyrights, I believe it unable to find the profile file or the variables which needs to be defined

Also check that there is sufficient permission for /tmp directory
# ll -d /tmp

The only issues I see are in the 4 CDE executable files. They should be SUID-root executable as noted in the warnings.
As previuosley noted, does it work if you try to login as root? If yes, very likely fixing the 4 SUID-root files will solve the problem.
All other warnings can be ignored. By the way do not attempt to change the permission of any of the symbolic links in the warnings. You will mess up the permissions of the symbolic link targets and not the symbolic links themselves.

Apologises for not scoring earlier but I thought it was to be done when the call was completes

Ok after a long and hard look at the other systems that are working I have found the problem

RPCBIND. I had disabled all of the nfs scripts in the system startup including nfs.core so will now have to add it in again.

I don't suppose someone could explain as we don't use nfs at all here and I am a bit loathed to start re-adding processes we don't use

NOTE: CDE utilizes ToolTalk services, which are RPC-based. Therefore, if the RPC services are not functioning, CDE will not work as expected. A frequent occurrence is where the NFS and NIS rc startup scripts are disabled in /etc/rc.config.d which normally would start portmap/rpcbind, and therefore some other method must of starting the daemon must be implemented.

Even if the process rpcbind is running, it may need to be restarted to get back to a normal state.
