The -v option would indeed show on-screen what is being backed up during the operation. &lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;What I am looking for is along the lines of percentage completed of the files that are being backed up. &lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;</description>

      <description>That would imply some intelligence on the part of 'tar' to know beforehand how many files and/or how much data is being backed up.  &lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;'tar' has no such intelligence.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;</description>
