hI, we want transfer database archive log to tape drive
is it possble to create the directory in tape drive to move the file.
How the old contents of tape are erased

Yes, but you may only get one archive log per tape.

What happens, depends on which tape drive you use,norewind and such.

The results are likely to be a bit messy.

Better to write the arhive logs to disk and use tar to push a whole bunch of them to tape once or twice a day.

Sorry, forgot something.

If you look at the man page for fbackup, there is an option to erase the previous tape.

Understand this however, fbackup writes to tape. It keeps some temporary files, but writes only to tape.

Better you follow the advice of the first post.

Tape drives are not disks. There is no concept of a directory on a tape. You simply pick one or more files and store them. tar offers the (dangerous) option to append multiple files onto the same tape. fbackup is a commercial quality backup tool which means that a complete index is at the front of the tape. The very first file written to the tape automatically removes access to any old data on the tape. Modern tapes cannot be spaced beyond the end of the most recent write.
