Hi ,
I had a bad root disk it does nothave mirror .all i have is cold backup.what is the procedure to recover a system form cold backup

I hate when that happens. That's why I have mirroring on ALL servers.

I hope a "cold backup" is an Ignite recovery tape or Ignite image. Is it?

Otherwise, I hope yu have your installation media handy too.

OK, then you will need to reinstall the OS on your system via CD/DVD media, install the appropriate patches, and then install the netbackup agent.

After that is done, you can restore whatever else you need.

This isn't good at all.

If the root disk is partially usable, I would first try getting an Ignite recovery tape made from it.

Without an Ignite image, you may have to install the operating system from your installation media from scratch. You will have to re-establish networking, etc. Then (after that pain subsides) refresh from your backup your custom configuration files (e.g. /etc/passwd, etc. etc.) and begin to re-customize your environment.

You can 'vgimport' your non-vg00 volume groups using:

# vgimport -m /etc/lvmconf/vgNN.mapfile -s -v /dev/vgNN

...after first restoring from your backup the '/etc/lvmconf/vgNN.mapfile' files. If you _didn't_ back these up, you can still 'vgimport' by first doing a 'vgscan' to rebuild the 'etc/lvmtab' file. Once you build this file, 'strings /etc/lvmtab' will show you the physical device files to specify for the 'vgimport'. See the 'vgscan' and 'vgimport' manpages for more information.

you asked about dd from working disk / system. if that working system is close to the "dead" one, you might make a an ignite backup of that one and install it on the dead drive....

other than that, the once you're able to restore the "netbackup", you'll be back to where you were when that was taken....provided it has all of the data you need for the root volumes.

hopefully, your data *doesn't* reside in vg00, so you only need to restore those directories residing on vg00.

Base OS from media means everything you did, every custom configuration is lost.

Ignite make_tape_recovery or make_net_recovery restores everything from the boot partition.It preserves network configuration lvm layout.

Procedure:
1) Install Os.
2) Install all third party software and patches.
3) Restore data from backup unless you were fortunate enough to have it off system, e.g. NFS, Fiber Network, whatnot.

I've done this. Depending on the complexity of the applications, it could take days.
