difference between mkfs and newfs

Hi

I think both is used to create the file system.

# newfs -F vxfs -o largefiles /dev/rdsk/c0t1d0

#mkfs -F vxfs -o version=4,largefiles /dev/vgqa/lvol1

Am i correct that both above commands are used to create the filesystem.

Shalom,

newfs is a front end for mkfs because people found mkfs a little hard to use.

Check the man page:

"The newfs command is a "friendly" front-end to the mkfs command (see mkfs(1M)). The newfs command calculates the appropriate parameters and then builds the file system by invoking the mkfs command."

The mkfs command creates a file system by writing on the special file special. operands are listed on file system specific manual pages

The newfs command is a "friendly" front-end to the mkfs command (see mkfs(1M)). The newfs command calculates the appropriate parameters and then builds the file system by invoking the mkfs command.

1 mksf make device file is the device is know in the system.

2newfs create a new file system.
