When starting the Oracle report server process, it receives a permission denied error trying to open /dev/kmem as read-only. Is it okay to change permissions on this file to allow "other" to have read access?
it should look like this:

crw-r----- 1 bin sys 3 0x000001 Apr 23 2001 /dev/kmem

but, if you want to add read for everyone, go for it.

live free or die
harry

Hi,

It's a huge security issue to give read access to the memory! It basically allows anybody to access anything stored there.

Did you make a standard installation of Oracle (user: Oracle.dba)? This should have been handled by the installation process, but oracle has problems using non-standard user names...

Jean-Charles

hi,

i don't have any system which gives any permission
to the world for /dev/kmem

the permission are:
crw-r----- 1 bin sys 3 0x000001 Nov 27 2000 /dev/kmem

I don't think it is a
good idea to give even read
permission for this file.
kmem is the kernel memory
and only system-mode process
will have access to "poke"
it.

Check your oracle install
again. I havent come across
a case where oracle needs
access to kmem directly.

-raj
