a tape imgae made from make_tape_recovery -a /dev/rmt/c10t1d0BESTn -x inc_entire=vg00.The recovery.log shows the image made successfully. tar tvf /dev/rmt/c10t1d0BESTn went through many files, but in the middle of the process it failed and gave directory checksum error. Is it a tape problem or file itself having issue?
any experience to share? Thanks.

More than likely a media issue or the tape drive head needs cleaning. Run the cleaner tape once and retry. If it fails at the same point, it is more than likely a damaged media.

You can also try using another tape drive if you have one.

Good luck

a DDS3 tape with a good ignite image went through in other tape drive with no problem, but failed on this drive when doing tar tvf /dev/rmt/c10t1d0BESTn. This led to think this drive is bad, but tar cvf /tmp to the tape, then tar tvf from the tape all went with no issue on this tape drive, which leads thinking the drive is good. Is the problem from ignite? or the original file system?

unfortunately, one good (or bad) tar isn't enough to tell which had the issue (tape or drive). A transient error could well be a dirty drive.

it should have nothing to do with ignite or the disk system however.

consider downloading Library and Tape Tools in order to test the drive.

You didn't mention it, but you did skip over the first file on the ignite tape, correct?

yes, skip the first file by mt -t /dev/rmt/c10t1d0BESTn fsf 1 after mt -f ...rew. tar tvf /dev/rmt/...went for minutes, then failed.
