    <description>i'm trying to determine why printing from an hp unix oracle app server (hp ux 11.23) is slower than a windows (2003 server). the difference is approx. 10-14 seconds when printing any oracle form.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;hp unix app server (rx6600)with 64 bit dual core itanium processors @1595mhz &amp;amp; 6gb of memory,533 mhz FSB &amp;amp; 8.5 gb of system bandwith &amp;amp; dual memory controllers. The windows server is 32 bit gateway 975 server with dual xeon processor @3.0 ghz with 3 gb of memory, 512k L2 cache and 533mhz FSB. &lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;</description>

      <description>&amp;gt;&amp;gt;the difference is approx. 10-14 seconds when printing any oracle form.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Where does this difference occurr?&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Does this happen when generating the output?  Does it happen when Oracle drops the printout off to the printer?  Does it happen when sending the output from the server to the printer?&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;There are lots of variables, any of which could make a difference.  Is this 10-14 seconds a big deal?  Is the timing of the report critical to your business?</description>

      <description>With the data you provided, it is not even remotely possible why hpux printing gets additional 10-14 seconds but :&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;* would your HPUX server not printing to the printer directly but using an intermediary (a.k.a. remote printer) ?&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;* would there be a network issue between hpux server and the printer (as in different subnets with firewalls in between) ?&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;* if the printer is setup with a symbollic name instead of an ip address, would there be a name resolution issue ?&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;</description>

      <description>Most of the important pieces of information are missing. How is thew printer connected to HP-UX? Is the printer an HP product? Does the printer have a built-in network card? If this is an HP printer with an HP network card, did you configure it with hppi or set it up as a remote printer? Or is the printer on another box and you are printing to the remote box which then sends the job to the printer?&lt;BR /&gt; &lt;BR /&gt;What is the data being printed? Is it simple ASCII text or are there fancy fonts and graphics being generated? Is the printer Postcript only?&lt;BR /&gt; &lt;BR /&gt;This is not a server performance issue. Printers are incredibly slow compared to modern servers.</description>

      <description>you're right there isn't enough information to come up with an informed decision... it happens on all the printers that are attached to the network... the only common demonitar was that we moved from a windows server to a unix server to support the oracle application server.. when we run the same process using the windows server the times are much better... 12-24 seconds doesn't seem like a lot except when you're used to 3-4 seconds... we're now checking on the how the unix server is connected to the network, # of network interface cards etc...  think we can close this thread...</description>

      <description>Shalom,&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Lots of factors to consider.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;The rx6600 system has much more powerful processors, more ram, and a different bus.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;The print queue being used in Unix is samba/cifs? That is a different code base than the windows server, which microsoft has been tweaking for years and years.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;The oracle application server could be part of the delay as well. Are you using Oracle reports, which uses X/motif to generate output, a wholly different technology than they use on Windows?&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;You need to limit the scope of this fishing expedition or you will spend a lot of time and get no fish.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;SEP</description>

      <description>Hello Donald, &lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;can you check the "Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds" at the bottom , returned from pinging the printer from windows and 6600, from the machine from where print is being fired.&lt;BR /&gt;&lt;BR /&gt;Regards,&lt;BR /&gt;Rahul</description>
