VG00 spanned on one disk (not mirrored)
4. all Disks are available in 4.5 GB size
5. only one 4.5 GB disk is spare, i.e. not in use by any VG.

any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Hi Ranju,

Upgrade is a process that 'might' waste a lot of time (because of number of samll issues)
So if there is NO special reason for upgrading, it is good if you go for a fresh installation.
You can reinstall the OS (11.11) and then the applications.
Thanks for the replies.

But

1) can i install it on my spare disk.
2) is 4.5 GB enough for the 11.11 OS and applications?
3) if it is sufficient, then how about if i install the new OS on that disk and then copy /home, /opt, /etc/passwd, hosts, groups and other important files from the old disk to the new one.

IIRC you need around 9GB minimum including swap.

Hi:

One disk at 4.5 GB for vg00 is NOT going to work!

http://docs.hp.com/en/5991-6552/ch02s02.html

As for not mirroring vg00, that's fine if you don't mind rebuilding your server in the event that your disk fails!

Given the hardware and the apparent data, I would not migrate on this platform.

Regards!

...JRF...

JRF,
i saw in the pdf that k580 is fully compatible to migrate to 11.11, but if only hard disk is your only concern, then

What you think if we can install one 9GB drive in it to load OS? is it good to go then.

and if i do cold install, i think it will wipe out only VG00(not the other VGs)...right?

if it is so, is simply VG importing will do the things for me for other VGs?

You can try with a 9GB disk - the system will tell you during if this is enough.

To be prepared, I would do a preview vgexport and store the mapfile anywhere else.

Then do a cold installation on a new disk and vgimport your VGs.

Hi (again):

> What you think if we can install one 9GB drive in it to load OS? is it good to go then.

Depending on the operating enviornment (FOE, EOE, etc) this will be tight, but I've done it. Configure a minimal primary swap (~ 512 MB) as your primary and add the necessary secondary swap on a non-vg00 volume.

> and if i do cold install, i think it will wipe out only VG00(not the other VGs)...right?

You can choose the target disk for vg00 and leave the other disks untouched.

> if it is so, is simply VG importing will do the things for me for other VGs?

Yes, correct. You might want to do a 'vgexport -p -s -m ...' to create mapfiles of your non-vg00 disks with their VGID to simplify the subsequent 'vgimport' under the new operating system. Be sure to copy the mapfiles that you create to a place where you can get to them.

Once again, I urge you to try to mirror vg00. Rebuilding rarely comes at a convenient time.

Regards!

...JRF...
