As per other comments, you need to interrupt the boot process, and boot to the H/W path of your CD.
This will already be bootable, and will load a support kernel which will control the upgrade.

Hope this helps

Steve

We are currently trying to install a newer
version of the operating system by using the
install command at the ISL prompt.

We are receiving the following error at the
ISL prompt:

Utility File Header inconsistent. Bad System
ID.

Does anyone know what this error message
means?

thanks,
SLS

When you boot from the Core O/S Install CD it will automatically initialize the install. I think that you have booted to your boot disk.

When you are provided with the opportunity to press to discontinue start up do so. You then need to type sea and it will display the bootable devices. Figure out what entry represents your CD or DVD and type bo px

This should begin the install for you

The boot proc. goes something like this
PDC->ISL->hpux->vmunix

You choose the boot disk from the PDC prompt which will load and run the ISL from the chosen boot disk.

Hit the escape key after initiating the boot proc. You should get some sort of menu now choose the boot device in your case the OS cdrom.

Hope this helps.

regards,
Anthony

Since 10.0 it's not necessary to interrupt the boot process and interact with the ISL.
Just let the box boot up from CD and it will automatically start the install routine
As per other comments. To find the cdpath however, interrupt the boot sequence and type search. All potential bootable devices will be shown. Now all you have to do is point to the cdpath and interact with the TUI (character wizard).
Hope this helps,
Bernie
