why start this from another server? you can pre-backup scripts run on the backup client as well, wouldn't that be much easier?

if running your script from the backup server, you will have to build in a mechanism to connect to the client first, using passwordless ssh for example.

also you should consider using rman for backing up oracle db's. use rman to dump the data to disk and backup that dumped data.

We are installing Netbackup on our HPUX machines. Normal backup is working fine(HPUX is the client).
We're trying to execute a script on the client to shutdown the Oracle database so we can do a cold backup. The script is initiated from the backup server(Linux).
Never seems to shut down the database?

hi,

if you are using online backup on the Oracle DB, you need to set the tables to the backup mode, and them you will be able to backup DB,
also for the DB restoration/recovery ( transaction to some time ) you nned to have a archive logs.

mikap

You should use the bpstart and bpend scripts on the host being backed up.

http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/290150.htm
