Hi All,

Shortly, we have a UPS replacement due to that we need to shutdown and power-off all the servers.

We have the following:
HP-UX Servers
Linux Servers
EVA 8000

and other peripherals:
DDS Tape Drives on unix server
CD ROM Drives on unix/linux servers
Tape MSL Library.

Can someone help me the sequential procedure to follow the shutdown and power-off the above servers and also the start-up.
For power-off the server should need to physical go and have to turned off? Hope we can power-off the hpux servers by using MP console right?

Thank you.

Hello S.S.,

1. You should first shutdown your critical applications. Use the application specific commands. You must wait for this process to end. (and this might take a while...)

If you have a cluster, stopping the cluster might shutdown the applications correctly.

2. You can shutdown the HP-UX servers by issuing

shutdown -h -y 0

h stands for Halt. After that you can power off the server (power off UPS)

3. Power off EVA by issuing the proper shutdown command from the controller(s). This will write the content of the cache on the physical HDDs installed on EVA.

Do not power off the server (even through MP) until you stop your application!

For the linux servers, it is important also to issue the shutdown command.
(shutdown -h now) See man shutdown for the actual command.

A word about shutdown order: if you have linux/HP-UX servers that presents NFS/samba volumes to other servers/clients, then you should first stop ALL those clients and in the end you should stop the NFS server.
Also, if you have EVA volumes presented to linux servers, you should take care of this issue in the same way (stop linux servers first then EVA)

Horia.

Hi ,

Don't think that you require to pull the power cable from the servers. Also , for complete power down the EVA , the order of shutdown should be san s/w , controllers , and disk array if you are completely powering off the EVA.

Regard,
FrogIsDeaf

SS,
It depends upon the test, some customer do a full shutdown test where they remove the power cable as well and start from scratch.
so it really depends upon your need, i mean ur customer ;)

BR,
Kapil+

I Do Agree with >>Kapil Jha

It depends what kind of "UPS maintance activity has been conducted,"

scenario 1:-

if total UPS power shut down, Yes need to unplug the power cables from "Server" hence we d'not want to give sudden "spic" to Server immediately once the power resumes.better ON the UPS once everything Green from UPS , Plug back the power cables to the server and than power ON server.

scenario 2:-
if its just "UPS Battery replacement activity we no needed to "un plug cables from the server"

Again its depends, as per your original post

>>Shortly, we have a UPS replacement due to that we need to shutdown and power-off all the servers.<<

Its better / safe to unplug cables from server, I would consider this total power shut down activity
