I have an rp4410 server containing a dual ported Ultra320 card that is then attached to a DS2120. For a couple of weeks now the following message just started to show once or twice a day within the system log. No data loss is incurred.

SCSI Ultra320 IO Type: SCSI IO has timed-out Inquiry Command - CDB 12 00 00 00 ff 00.

I have already changed out the SCSI cable and the terminator that is attached to my DS2120. This seems to not have fixed my problem.

What does this message mean and is it actually a problem or could it be a false positive?
The Inquiry command means the system is asking "What are you?" from a SCSI device. When an Inquiry command times out, it means the SCSI device did not answer at all.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCSI_Inquiry_Command

Decoding the CDB according to the first table, it seems the system was requesting the basic inquiry data.

A dual-ported Ultra320 card... sounds a lot like A7173A. It seems to have two driver versions available for download at software.hp.com:

https://h20392.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=scsiU320-00
https://h20392.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=A7173A

The first link is the more recent version.

I think an older version of this driver (on 11.11 at least) used to have a known problem, which presented as frequent spurious error messages of some known type once the system uptime reached something above 500 days (if I recall correctly).

Your problem sounds different from that one, but it might still be worthwhile to check the driver version.

What is your HP-UX version and Quality Pack level? Do you have the "scsiU320-00" bundle installed? If not, consider installing it; if you have it, check its version number.

MK

It appears I do have the scsiU320-00 bundle at revision B.11.23.0606.

I could try to update this and see if it works. The Gold Quality Pack bundle I am running currently is the bundle from June09.

I have contemplated installing the newest GQP.
