Shalom,

The answer depends on your hardware. You have depending on hardware two "upgrade" paths. HP-UX 11i v2 (11.23) Same end of support date or HP-UX 11i v3 (11.31).

Upgrade is unreliable but possible. Cold install is better way to go.

SEP

I'm trying to decipher exactly what version of 11i that I have and what my upgrade options are to get to 11i version 2. I see something about 11i v1.6 can only cold install to version 2.

How can I tell if I'm runnong 11i v1.6 or lower. Does this tell me I'm runnong 11i .0412?

HPUXBase64 B.11.11 HP-UX 64-bit Base OS
HPUXBaseAux B.11.11.0412 HP-UX Base OS Auxiliary
HWEnable11i B.11.11.0509.430 Hardware Enablement Patches for HP-UX 11i v1, September 2005

Thanks in advance!

I'm really looking for what my upgrade options are. I see a section in the 11i v2 upgrade guide that says "11i v1.6 update has been discontinued with the December 2005 or later version of 11i v2"

How do I know if Im at 11i v1.6 or lower (or higher)?

>>How do I know if Im at 11i v1.6 or lower (or higher)?

You are definitely NOT at 11i v1.6! HP-UX 11.11 is also known as 11i v1.

HP-UX 11.23 is known as 11i v2.

The 11i v1.6 was ONLY for servers with Itanium CPUs. Since you are running 11.11, you have PA-RISC CPUs in your server. DO NOT CONCERN YOURSELF WITH 11i v1.6!!!!

So, based on that you **should** be able to upgrade to 11i v2. However, you should read the release notes and the installation guide to verify that your system will support 11iv2.
The version number "B.11.11" of the HPUXBase64 bundle indicates you're running exactly 11i v1.0.

The version number of the HPUXBaseAux bundle is B.11.11.0412 indicates your system was apparently installed using the December 2004 release of the 11i v1.0 installation media.
(.0412 = year 2004, 12th month)

Twice a year, HP creates updated releases of HP-UX installation media: it's sort of like when Microsoft releases Windows installation media "with Service Pack N built-in".

The fact that you're running 11i v1.0 indicates your hardware uses PA-RISC processors. 11i v1.6 was an Itanium-only release, so you could not upgrade to that even if you wanted to (and you don't, because 11i v1.6 is already more obsolete than 11i v1.0; see below). Depending on your PA-RISC hardware model, you can *probably* upgrade to 11i v2, and *maybe* to 11i v3.

When upgrading to the next major version of HP-UX (or, as a special case, from 11i v1.0 to 11i v2), a cold install is not strictly required, but *strongly* recommended. If you choose to proceed without a cold install, take a backup first: the update-ux procedure from one major version to the next is known to fail sometimes.

If you want to skip major versions (e.g. to go from 11i v1.0 directly to 11i v3), a cold install is required.

The update-ux procedure works much better if you only wish to upgrade, for example, from December 2004 release of 11i v1.0 to the December 2006 release.

The conversion table between "classic HP-UX" version numbers and the new "11i vN.N" version numbers:

11.00 and below: only classic numbering exists.

11.11: originally marketed as simply "11i", later re-defined as "11i v1.0". Runs on PA-RISC processors only. HP support for this release ended at the end of year 2009.

11.20: marketed as "11i v1.5", runs on Itanium processors only. A short-lived release, accompanied the earliest HP-UX server models with Itanium processors.

11.22: marketed as "11i v1.6", runs on Itanium processors only. Another short-lived release: HP support for this release ended at the end of April 2004.

11.23: marketed as "11i v2". Originally released in September 2003 for Itanium processors, but updated in September 2004 into a combined release for both Itanium and PA-RISC processors. A long-term release: you can still buy new 11i v2 licenses and media until the end of this year.

11.31: marketed as "11i v3". A combined release for both PA-RISC and Itanium processors. Currently the latest major version of HP-UX.

MK

Tim,

From 11.11 you can do a cold install using DVD or ignite-ux server to get to 11.31.

- However if you have to check the hardware and massstorage compatibilty checks:

- if you have 11.23 , you can run msv2v3check utility to check compatibility to 11.31.

Check out the below links:

HP-UX 11i v2 to 11i v3 Mass Storage Check Utility
https://h20392.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=MSV2V3Check

To migrate the SAN data to 11iv3 you have to check the Mass storage interoperability matrix & the compatibility of the SAN frame to hp-ux 11iv3.

http://www.hp.com/products1/serverconnectivity/mass_storage_devices.html

Further details: 11iv3 Install and Update guide:
http://docs.hp.com/en/5992-5795/5992-5795.pdf

Cheers,
Raj.
