I have a rp7410 server with one dds4 tape drive. My OS is B.11.11.
When I am trying to run the:
make_recovery -A -v -d /dev/rmt/1mn

When It reached on "the creating the configuration file", I get this message:

make_recovery(520): A problem has been detected in determining which volume groups and/or disks are to be part of the recovery tape. This could be due to a failure of the "vgdisplay" command returns valid output and re-retry.

What is going wrong?
Hi,

Check the output of
# vgdisplay -v

By the way you should upgrade your ignite version (make_tape_recovery)

Best regards,
Robert-Jan

Hi AP,

attach the /var/opt/ignite/recovery/latest/recovery.log file to see the errors.

Also, I suggest that you use make_tape_recovery command with -x inc_entire option to indicate the VGs you want to backup. This command provides more options and thereby more flexibility.

There is a possibility that one are more disks in the VG are unavailable causing this error. Check through ioscan and vgdisplay commands.

If you are trying to use ignite for the first time on this server, it is a good IDEA to check all the required patches for ignite.

share us the result of these commands.

With regards,
Mohan.

Ok, I find out that although my server is running properly, when I run the SAM and I go to Disks and File Systems, my local disks (which are mirrored)
is Unused and there aren't in a VG as they should to be(vg00).
But with bdf command I can see the /dev/vg00/lvol3... mounted.

And with the vgdisplay is not appearing any vg00!!!

Thats interesting. So you may have to recollect what was done earlier.

it is very strange that vg00 is not in lvmtab. was the lvmtab moved/copied to another name recently?

What you can do is,

1) mv lvmtab lvmtab.org
2) vgscan -v

then check if your new lvmtab contains the vg00.

if this too fails, we have a problem at hand. then we need to go in single-user mode and then try importing vg00.

But I hope vgscan works for you. Do let us know what happens.

With regards,
Mohan.

Indeed, your lvmtab file has become corrupted. I hope someone did not try to edit this file!! It is a binary and critical to system operation. It can be corrupted while running and everything will seem to work OK from a filesystem perspective but as you've seen, vgdisplay (and other LVM commands) will probably fail. Rebuilding lvmtab with vgscn as mentioned above should this potential disaster.

And once you fix the vgdisplay problem, do NOT use make_recovery, especially on such new hardware as the rp7410. It has been obsolete for a long time. Your version of Ignite/UX should be at least C.6.something:

cat /opt/ignite/Version

Without the latest version, you run the risk of failure due to new hardware and driver features that do not exist in make_recovery. The make_tape_revcovery command is quite different. Use this to save your VG00 onto your DDS4 tape:

make_tape_recovery -I -v -x inc_entire=vg00 -a /dev/rmt/0mn
