anyway to recover deleted files on HP_UX?

I did a rm -rf on a dir by mistake. Can I recover those lost files by any means?

Well,

Manu .. you can only recover text/ascii files if you know the contents and no body has overwritten the filesystem therafter.
Also it is not 100% possible to get everything you lost.

umount the filesystem and use dd command on the filesystem.

# dd if= of=filename
# vi filename

Try searching the strings you know and do cut and paste as much as possible for you. :)

as there is no option to recover once removed,
so always use -i option with rm, it will ask for confirmation.

no backup = no recovery!

This is why we ALWAYS stress people to do BACKUPs.

deleting a needed file - painful
having an available backup - priceless

Check with your systems administrator to make sure that there isn't a backup. I find it hard to believe that a responsible sysadmin would leave unbacked-up systems. It may well be being backed up regularly and you just didn't know it.

I have lost not just text/ascii files, but large number of tar files and some packages.

Sorry to say that u r in tourble now.
Just try searching for any old backup, that is the only way out otherwise you have lost everything that was in that directory..

Thanks for the suggestions. Luckily few of the stuff I had backed up on my PC. :). I will never use "rm -rf" on anything again!
