Ignite and Ignite recovery issues

Hi, I've run a ignite backup to a HP Surestore Tape library e2/20 and would like to know how can I check to see if there is a valid image on the tape?? Are there any switches to the 'make_tape_recovery' command to read my image/archive??

My next question is i've then moved this tape library over to another server, have successfully tar'd to another tape on the library. I've loaded my ignite backup tape and have rebooted. I've gone into the PDC, searched for valid boot devices and then tried to boot from p4 (my tape library connected via FC). Attached is the output of my search and boot.

Any help would be appreaciated.

Hi,
The first part of Ignite tape is boot section. You have to put:
mt -f /dev/rmt/ fsf 1
There is no image on tape, the files are tar-ed. Than you can see the files there with tar.
tar tvf /dev/rmt/

For the second question:
The machine should be neer the same configuration like the machine you have taken ignite recovery tape. It look like that there is diferent HW configuration.

I think that you should check the SCSI cables on the machine or SCSI terminators.

hi,

do this to review/verify your tape's content depending on the tape device file:

# mt -t /dev/rmt/0mn rew
# mt -t /dev/rmt/0mn fsf 1
# tar tvf /dev/rmt/0mn

as for the second part, please confirm the hardware path of the tape library connected to that server. please refer to this KB as well:

Hi

For recovery, system configuration should be near to one where tape was created.

Please check whether you are able to boot from recovery tape with the original system where you created it.

Hi Brendan,

Below is the steps to verify the make_tape_recovery backup (docID : KBRC00010817) :

When you moved the tape library to other system, is the system similar with the previous one (the one that you make the make_tape_recovery) ? If the same, check the firmware of the system.

Try to create a make_tape_recovery first on the new machine and try to boot it from there, see whether the tape can give you a right result. Since you informed that you can succesfully tar to another tape on the library.

thanks all for those 'mt' commands. Now I know that I have a valid archive. My next step will be tomorrow to look at my I/O card problem and try and boot from the tape. Will update further then.

I've allocated points for a couple of reply's and will do the rest tomorrow.

Hi,

Make sure your system has fiber channel boot support. This depends on many parameers like PDC version , FC HBA used etc.

As you can see P4 is my fibre channel card. It doesn't see a tape drive at the other end of the FC adapter. Is this because it's a HP Surestore e2/20 tape library ??

I know there's a valid image on the tape and the tape is loaded in the drive ready to go.

Hi,

I had similar kind of problem with a rp3410 and MSL 5000 series library , I couldnt make as I was told that its not supported.

Is ur library using a NSR ? ( Network storage Router ) . if yes , it may need to be configured as well

Thanks for that. I'm going to connect a SCSI tape drive to the box and run my ignite backup and recovery from it.
