topic Integration of Samba in Operating System - HP-UX

Is samba an integral part of the HP-UX install or can this product be removed without impacting the system? We do not use any nfs shares for security reasons and have no use of the samba product in the forseeable future. I just want to be sure that the OS does not need samba for other reasons than for Windows to UNIX net/printer shares.

Unless you need windows clients to be able to read/write data, to and from this server, you will definitely not need samba to be running. And for security reasons, removing or disabling samba, eliminates another point of vulnerability.

So, go ahead and disable it.

Hi John,

Samba is integral part of HP-UX. It is called CIFS server in HPUX. It is not required by OS any time. If you dont need sharing across Windows and HP-UX, you can go ahead and disable all services like, smb, nmb, swat..

-Arun
