Need help with console settings

I have a HP 700/98 terminal connected via a serial A/B switch to two identical RP5450s running HP-UX 11i. There is nothing wrong with the console cables/connections to either server.

When I connect to one server, I can commmunicate with it perfectly with the terminal. However, when I connect to the other (flipping the A/B switch), anything I type in is unintelligible, and I cannot read what the server is responding with. It's as if the data bits and parity settings for the terminal are wrong.

I remember my original vendor messed with the settings on one of the servers, and it seems what one server expects from the console is different than what the other one expects. This seems to be a setting that was changed during bootup. Can enyone help be find that seeting so I can get both servers responding properly to the 700/98?

Hi Paul,

Try to power of the console which has problems.
When you power on the console hold down the d key for about 10 seconds it will beep.
After that the console settings are back in default mode. Then you wold see notmal texst again.

Again, there is nothing wrong with the terminal. It communicates fine with one server, but not the other. There is a setting on the malfunctioning server I must change. I believe I have to do so right after a reboot. I saw my vendor do it. However, it was nearly 2 years ago and I just cannot remember what it was.

I think you have a baud rate or seriel port setting problem. One of the server is woking with 9600 while other may be using the terminals default ..this may be an example..

I think I found the problem. My terminal is set for "hp". On the server that works, TERM is set for "hp" when root logs in. On the server that doesn't, TERM is set to "vt100". I just need to know where the TERM variable is set when root logs in, edit that file, and I will be set. I tried /usr/homes/.profile, /usr/homes/.login, and /.profile, and "vt100" is not set in any of those files.

Try looking in /etc/profile. Default configuration runs ttytype to automatically determine terminal type involved.

Rather than mucking around with system configuration files, however, you can configure the GSP/MP to use "hp" instead of "vt100" terminal type. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the command is SC in command mode. (For Serial Configuration) Should be easy enough to spot in HElp if that's not it.

I don't recall either if you'll be able to see everything on the console by hitting ^B when the settings of the term type and the actual monitor aren't matching. At worst, you can attach a PC/laptop and use Hyperterm or some other vt100 emulator to make the change. (Assuming you don't have the GSP/MP configured for network access... if you do, just telnet to it with a vt100 session.)

I have no .profile in /etc. I checked the server that works and neither does it. How precisely does one get into the GSP environment?

Every time we've had an issue like this with consoles its been due to flow control. Try setting that to none on the terminal and see what happens. The default setting seems to vary with the age of the systems.

Once again, there is NOTHING wrong with my terminal. The problem is in the one server. It is a configuration setting. I just don't know what it is or how to get to it.

I found the answer. I just needed to do a CTRL-B at the terminal and then type in "CA" at the GSP prompt, and set my terminal type to "Hpterm". It was set to "vt100".
