How large is the file? The 2Gb limit is for industry standard, while the patch allows pax to handle up to 8Gb (similar to a tar patch). Files larger than 8Gb must use fbackup or a commercial backup program.

Hi Burhan,

The patch doesn't require a reboot, can you check the following:

# swlist -l fileset -a state -a patch_state PHCO_32438

Make sure above output you see the "state" is "configured". If "installed" stated, please "swconfig PHCO_32438 \*" to configure it.

Also, run cksum for the following files and make sure the value is the value as shown below:

225566991 389120 /sbin/pax
410241828 90112 /usr/bin/pax
4106078265 6380 /usr/lib/nls/msg/C/pax.cat

If there is discrepancies found, please consider to reinstall the patch.

Hope above help to resolve your issue.
Hi,

If you want to save a file in /home,
which is greater than 2Gb, /home should be mounted with the largefiles option.

Can't you create a folder called /backup, with it's own mountpoint, and backup the oracle DB in this directory.

If /home gets full it might be that users can't login.

Darrel

Check to see where your tar command is found:

whence tar

Use the what command to see if the tar program has actually been patched:

what /usr/lib/tar

Now, are you using tar or pax? The patch you listed is for pax. What is the command you are using? There is a separate patch for tar to handle up to 8Gb files: PHCO_28992

You can change the filesystem to largefiles online if you have OnlineJFS installed (and licensed), and the filesystem is vxfs (JFS), then just run the following:

fsadm -F vxfs -o largefiles /mountpoint

If not, you have to create a new mount, when you newfs it, specify -o largefiles. Mount it somewhere and migrate home, if you want this to be a permanent option.

OnlineJFS is better, but it's a bit pricey.

Your problem appears to be more filesystem side, but you might want to consider GNU tar. It has a lot more options, handles absolute file paths better, and supports largefiles natively.

From the porting and archive centre:

http://hpux.ee.ualberta.ca/hppd/hpux/Gnu/tar-1.15.1/

Don
