I have two brand new HP RP3440 systems that are not sending any output to the graphics display. Both systems have the PCI graphics boards. The systems have a new installation of HP-UX 11.23 with the March2006 patch bundle.

Results from a uname –a
HP-UX borth B.11.23 U 9000/800 1442270509 unlimited-user license

An error message is displayed if telneted to the console port.
Suspending Desktop Login…
Press [Enter] for a login prompt.
Log in. Desktop Login will resume shortly after you log out.

The X-Server can not be started on display borth
For details look into the file, Dtlogin.errorLogFile

Errors from the Xerrors file…
Failure to open default device file `/dev/crt`.
Please either specify the proper device filename in
your /etc/X11/X0screens file or fix `/dev/crt`. This filename is either
non-existent or is not a character special file.

The /dev/crt file did not exist, so I created the file by issuing this command: However, the file is moved after a reboot.
mknod /dev/crt c 174 0x000000

The /etc/X11/X0screens only has one entry
Screen /dev/crt

An iocan shows the graphics display

# ioscan -C graphics
H/W Path Class Description
========================================
0/2/1/0 graphics PCI Display (10025157)
Hi Matt,

You need to setup the console HW path from the BCH prompt. Be advised that until the system *actually* runs X11 the console *will* be the serial console output. Once X11 is running then the console *will* be the graphics device.
This is and has been a limitation of all HP9000 servers forever.

Rgds,
Jeff

Well....I guess I should qualify that.
It's been a limitation of 800 series (servers) systems forever.
Workstations - or 700 series - systems do not have that limitation for obvious reason. They *only* come with graphics displays.

Rgds,
Jeff

Jeff,

As suggested, the system console path was set by issuing conspath 1/0/0.0 from the ISL> prompt. This did not fix the problem. The system still complains about '/dev/crt' not being available.

I created the device file with 'mknod /dev/crt c 174 0x000000'. The file was gone after a reboot.

Do you have any other suggestions?

-Matt

The problem was caused by HP installing a noncompatible PCI card. The system shipped with an ATI card which only works in an Itanium system, not in a system with a PA-RISC CPU. The resolution for this problem is to replace the PCI card with one with HP part number A6150B.

-matt
