The card may be an HP card but it is very unlikely that a PC card will work in an HP-UX system. Somewhat similar to expecting a Mac card to work in a PC. There is no attempt for HP-UX designers to make PC cards compatible. There are very specific design requirements for HP-UX systems which often means that a custom card is required and designed only for HP-UX.

We have an older N4000. There is a card plugged into slot 3 (hw 0/12). The card appears to be a 1000mb nic. None of the other admins here know anything about the card.

The card does not show up in ioscan.I can not easily bring the box down to production issues. However, we would like to activate the 1000mb card if possible.

The card does not show a model number on the visible silver plating. I can see the words "hp invent" on the card how ever. I think the model number is just barely hidden behind the card cage. The slot is labeled as slot 3, turbo PCI, 0/12.

Ideas I have include: The card is not a supported Hpux card. ie, someone took a nic card from an x86 class box and stuck in this n4000. Other idea I have is: the card is in a "bad" slot.

Looking for any ideas why the card is not showing up in ioscan? (stm shows nothing also)

Thanks for any suggestions!
Michael:
the card might not have any driver configured in the kernel, have you tried "insf -e" to install the driver.

You might see if the gelan driver is "In" the kernel. Without knowing the product number, you are really just shooting in the dark so you might as well open the box up.

I would have expected that even if there were no driver present for the card, it would at least appear as "unclaimed" in the ioscan output. That it does not appear at all suggests to me that it may not be completely seated in the slot or something else has led to that slot being disabled. Some checking of dmesg and/or the system event logs may be in order.

The idea that it is not an HP-UX card is a good one - the best way to check that though would be to pull the card from the system and start looking for product/part numbers.

Thanks for the input folks. Appears I need to open up the box to get a good look at the card.
