Backup question

Hi all:

I want to make some changes in our system LV configuration. First I want to make a good system backup. I??ll make a tar copy of directory structure.

I want to create a make-recovery tape too.
How can I create it?
How can I recover from the tape in case of system corruption or any other problem?

Hi

1)I would consider fbackup as well for a whole system backup.It recovers quicker for individual files.

2)Make recover. See Ignite

About good backup:
1. use fbackup
#fbackup -f /dev/rmt/0m -i /
You can add -v option for verbose but backup will take more time

2. use Ignite-UX
#make_recovery -Av
this will create backup of vg00

3. use Ignite-UX
#make_tape_recovery ...
backup of all vg

Hi,
Best way to backup system is to use
# make_recovery -Avi
to prepare bootable recovery tape, but you must have Ignite installed.
If you have not Ignite installed use fbackup.

Hi:

Download the current, appropriate Ignite software version from the Ignite site and use 'swinstall' to install the depot.

Use the newer 'make_tape_recovery', which replaces the less robust 'make_recovery'. To create a recovery tape which includes *all* of vg00, do:

# /opt/ignite/bin/make_tape_recovery -x inc_entire=vg00 -I -v -a /dev/rmt/0mn

The '-I' option causes the subsequent use of the tape to be interactive. In the event that you need to use the recovery tape, simply boot from the tape.

Hi,

For my environment, the preference is make_recovery for a bootable installation and configuration and omniback for daily incremental and weekly full data backups.

Note that you must re-run your make_recovery especially when there are changes to your LVM configuration and hardware devices.

I didn??t find on ignite web how can I boot from a recovery tape made with make_tape_recovery, anyone knows the steps?.

make_tape_recovery recovers the whole system without demanding a tar or fbackup tape recover?

Hi Manuel,

Ignite (make_tape_recovery et al) backups are generally just for vg00 (though you can configure what you want to include). When rebuilding a system, first use the Ignite backup. Then vgimport the other VGs. That's the beauty of Ignite and LVM: you don't have to restore the other VGs.

To reload from an Ignite tape:
-Interrupt the boot process
-load the Ignite tape
-sea ipl (to find bootable devices which will include the tape drive with the Ignite tape loaded)
-boot #/#/#.# (the H/W path of the tape drive)
-Do not interact with IPL

You will be prompted to press a key if you want to interact with the installation. If you are rebuilding the system the Ignite backup was made on and don't want to make any changes just sit back and relax. If the hardware configuration is different then you will have to go through the interactive install. Since you want to make some LVM changes then you need to interact with the installation. You will get a character based menu from which you can choose boot disk, lv sizes, PE size, and network parameters, among other things.

A note of caution: If you choose disks for vg00 that were previously in a different VG you will no longer be able to vgimport the other VG. You will then have to restore from a backup.

You will have Ignite-UX on the application CD's. On 11.0 I believe it is on CD 4.

Ignite is great for a bootable all or nothing restore of vg00. We also do a fbackup and Ignite for the OS. Rember if you using a product like OMNIBACK to backup everything else you also must make a backup of OMNIBACK.
