tar options--- help

Hi all,

I am using
#tar -cv -T total_files
tar: cannot stat -T. Not dumped.

on HPUX 11.00. Where total_files is a file which holds all list of files to be tarred. That is my tar command is not reading that file as a argument. Problem remains same even if I provide complete path for total_files File.

Fix needed.

man tar

There is no dash T -T option.

tar is looking for a file named -T

This is why HP put man files on systems. It's not linux. If you need this option, you may wish to install gnu tar.

"-T" is not a valid option for the HP-UX version of tar, but if you really need this, have a look at

I simply do this,

cd /xxxx (cd to the directory you want to tar)

tar -cvf filename.tar *

Now all the files and directories in that directory will be tared to filename.tar file. For more info do "man tar"

I'm curious. I try very hard to ignore the
whole topic of ITRC forum points, but I see
that in this thread you got two helpful
responses explaining exactly what your
problem was, and pretty much exactly what to
do about it, plus one response which was
generally useless. You awarded four points
to each of these. Why?

Are you trying to annoy people by rewarding
good and bad answers equally, or don't you
recognize a good answer when you see one, or
what? I'm mystified. (Of course, if I get
four points for this, that might explain a
lot.)

If you don't want to use gnu tar, you can use pax(1):
$ pax -w -v -f /dev/rmt/0m < total_files

Cause man pages dont show -T option - I already checked that.
Also gnu tar is good replace which I have already knows through ITRC only, in some threads.
So, these replies dosnt add much to my knowledge still I want to pay off for valuable time these ppl spend for replying n explaining the stuff.
