Hi All,

Can you please let me know which enterprize backup software you would recommend for 300 HP intel servers running w2k3, vm, exchange, sms, sas, and 25 HPUX 11.23 servers running Oracle 9i, 10g? The backup server will be a win2k3 server, the tape library is a Speatra Storage Tek with 7-8 Sony tape drives. Your input will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Regards,
Jan Shu
System Admin

hi jan;
if you are planning an enterprise solution then you have not to many solutions. legato netbackup tsm and data protector. since your environment consist of hp-ux servers I would recommend data protector. you can take online backups of your oracle databases. you need 8 unix drive license + online agent licenses + cell manager. the most important pros is very user friendly and easy to use and configure.

Hasan.

I have used both DP and netbackup in PROD environments.I feel DP is simpler.

Defintly there are other s/w too in the market..

One of the most critical components in any enterprise backup solution is the database that tracks the contents of every tape. This can be gigabytes in size after a few months but it is the only sane way to manage massive amounts of data among very different servers and storage methods. DataProtector handles the all-important feature of raw volumes for databases that are sometimes used in Oracle (and often in Sybase and Informix, etc).
