Hi:

A 'root' account is merely an account with a uid=0. PLEASE don't do this. If you create a duplicate uid=0, for example, named "altroot" and then later do:

# find /path -user altroot -exec rm -rf {} \+

...then you just REMOVED every file and directory belonging to 'root' (since the '-user altroot' translates to '-user 0'.

Regards!

...JRF...

Using sudo to give a normal account access to run things as root is a much better approach than a second root account.

Hi (again):

> one of the user require to check the connectvity of server and the netbackup server. What do i do? how do i give root privileges to the user to troubleshoot the issue.

If a simple 'ping' will suffice, using the absolute path will allow the non-root user to access 'ping':

# /usr/sbin/ping somehost

As suggested, 'sudo' is on safe way to confer granular root privileges.

The concenpt of a "temporary" duplicate root account is meaningless. You might as well give out the 'root' password for the duration of the need and then change it when the work is complete. As I said, it is the UID=0 that matters, not (so much) the names by which it is aliased.

Regards!

...JRF...
