Tape drives are not accessbile on HPUX

Hi,

Through SAN Switches, Tape library “StorageTech L 700” which contains numerous tape drives is connected to the servers.
we had some faulty tape drives, which we have replaced.
These replaced drives are not accessible on HPUX servers.

'ioscan' shows NO_HW.

Interesting point is that they are accessible on SUN Solaris 8.0 and on Windows 2003 Servers.

HPUX 11.11 is running on our servers.
Previous tape drives are accessble on HPUX servers.

Any comments / suggestions are appreciated.

Hello,

What type of tape drives are these (LTO, etc.)?

It might be that you just need to load the stape driver.

Run 'kmsystem -q stape' and see if it's configured.

Do you have a scsi to fiber bridge in use?

If so, have a look into the syslog file after running ioscan. You need to do an fcmsutil ... replace_dsk ...

'ioscan' shows NO_HW.

Means the hardware is seen, or was seen but is not functioning.

Could mean the hardware died.

Could mean the media, e.g. switches and cables failed.

Quite normal. There will be numerous error messages in your syslog.log file about the tape drive's address disappearing. You must use the fcmsutil to tell HP-UX and the fibre card that a new device has replaced the old device. Although the option is "replace_disk" it really means "replace_device".

did you reinstall the driver?

#insf -e

then run ioscan -fnC tape.

and also check the cable and any possible way to see that hardware.

Yes, cometimes it is very much intersting.:)

If the above checking doesn't show your hardware then you have no option to replace it or talking with HP.

It is interesting that SUN and windows machines can see the tapes but HP-UX boxes are not.

Run these command and paste the output.

#ioscan -fnC tape
#insf -e
#ioscan

this is not the "ioscan -fn" output, but anyway, look for the card on h/w path

and you will see your fiber channel HBA device file.

Looks to me like the SCSI address of the tape drive has been modified.

I suggest using cstm,mstm or xstm to run further diagostics to find out just what hardware is present and if it is responsive at all.

To the original post, I'm wondering if the zoning on the fiber network is the issue.

Now run ioscan again.

As long as nothing else is changed (zoning, cabeling, etc.) you should see the tapes again as CLAIMED.
