NFS Performance improve

Hi ,

Our application is running in NFS Mounted Partition. We are having Two NFS Server configured in Serviceguard and two NFS clients. All are running on HP Unix 11.23. Server models are NFS Servers rx7640 and NFS Clients rx6600.

In one of the HP document i have seen that the performance can be increased by tuning vxfs and changing the NFS and Kernel RPC Tunable Parameters.

By vxtunefs command i am able to change the vxfs parametsrs but after putting in /etc/vx/tunefstab also the changes is not permanent each reboot the value is getting changed and also am not able to find any NFS related kernel tunable parameters like rpc_svc_maxthreads, nfs_srv_read_copy_avoid etc.. in my system.

can somebody help in this. For the above steps online JFS is required.

Note that 11.23 uses NFS v3 and NFS v4 has enhanced performance tuning options. NFS v4 is only available as part of HP-UX 11.31

I've written many papers and presentations on NFS performance. Can you tell me which HP document you saw that talks about tuning VxFS and kernel tunable parameters? I can potentially direct you to a better information source.

Since you're using 11.23 systems, you'll be interested in knowing about the NFS Tunables technical paper we wrote for 11.23 systems. That paper is posted here:

This paper describes all of the 11.23 NFS tunables, which patches are required to access them, how to tune them, etc.

In addition, we just released patch PHNE_38254 for 11.23 systems that automatically reconfigures your 11.23 system with an optimal set of NFS/ONC tunables. You can change the settings of the tunables any time you wish via kctune, but this patch sets seven of the most commonly used tunables to their optimal value at install time.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you run into any problems with the patch or the technical papers.

Thanks for your valuable information.

I am having some query regarding the NFS KERNEL parameter changes.

When i am going throgh SAM i am not able to see any of the NFS tunable paramer mentioned in the DOCs. But when i am doing a kctune -q it is showing the parametr.

If i ahave set the NFS related parameter through the command whether it will be persistenet or it will go to the default after reboot.

Anyway i didn't got any time to implement the NFS tuning. Once it has been done i will give you the out put.

Hi Manoj,

Most of the ONC/NFS kernel tunable parameters are not visible to SAM. You will need to use kctune to modify them, as specified in the white paper I referred you to. Any kctune changes you make will survive a reboot or kernel rebuild.

Hi Dave,

I have done the required changes as per your document except "GigE interrupts mapped to CPUs in same Cell" but didn't seen any significant improvement.

Any way i am still working on this NFS issue if any improvement is there i will let you know.

Hi Dave,

I have raised the issues with HP. They were asked to run number of performance checking applications like SHC,NETPERF,PING etc....

After that HP Confirmed that there are N/W and DISK I/O congestion is happening in the servers.

HP has send Separate patch set and some Tunable parameter. We have applied the same to our environment.

It seems there are some improvement in the Server performance for the last 2 days.
