checksum error with TAR command

I have downloaded the ssh5.2 tar file and I'm receiving directory checksum error when I run the tar commmand.

And to add to Patrick's wise advice I'd inquire as to the download path that file took.
Did it come to HP server via a PC?
If so you *must* make sure you FTP it to the server from the PC in binary fashion - not ASCII.
I've seen that shoot down many a download.

figured it out. I had to use the gunzip command first. Did not notice the .gz extension.

One more reason to show actual commands and
actual results in your original problem
description is that it forces you to look at
what you're doing, which saying "when I run
the tar commmand" does not do.

Solving the problem _before_ hitting "Submit"
can be _so_ much more satisfying.
