Gurus, I have a very old HP-9000 server rp54xx running on HPUX 11.11 and I have to decommisition this server.

So I bought a similar server from a 3rd party vendor.

On the Source I have :

I have make all of this available on the target before I scrap the Source.

i know the options are Ignite/Clone/Golden image uging

make_sys_image or make_nwtk_image

but could some one give me a step by step procedure to do this from the command line.

If you have tape drive conncted to both the server,
-take an ignite image backup from 'source server' , and restore it on the target server.

Command to take ignite backup on source server:
# /opt/ignite/bin/make_tape_recovery -x inc_entire=vg00 -I -v -a /dev/rmt/0mn

#Assuming /dev/rmt/0mn is your tape drive) , [to find the tape device : use # ioscan -fnC tape ]

- Make the non-vg00 disks visible to the second server ,
-copy the non-vg00 vgs map files to the target server and Import the non-vg00 vgs to the target server. Activate , mount & verify.

hay Raj... thank you for responding..

I do not have a Tape Drive conneceted on either of the server but I have a NFS mount created in an external enclosure.

Could you give me the command to take the image on this nfs mount.

non-vg00 disks are external to the server on a storage & I have to take image of all these disks as well cos I have a eva connecetd to the Target..

how do I do this

-copy the non-vg00 vgs map files to the target server and Import the non-vg00 vgs to the target server.

how to copy the non vg00 map files... for this on the target do I have to create the non-vg00 volume groups

Grayh,

You have to create a network archive or Golden image, and boot the target system from the network archive (using bootsys) / or from ignite server .
-To boot the target system using ignite server:
at PDC: boot lan.x.x.x.x install
(Where x.x.x.x is the Ip address of the ignite server)

You need to configure a server that will act as ignite server ,

- You dont need to take image of external disks.
- You have to made the eva disks visible to the target server, fiber zoning required to present the luns to the target server ,
- once eva disks are presented to the target server:
i) create map file on the source server:
Suppose you have vg01 vg02 vg03 ... create map file using:
# vgexport -p -v -s -m vg01.map vg01
# vgexport -p -v -s -m vg02.map vg02

ii) ftp/scp the map files (vg01.map vg02.map ...) to target server.

iii) on target server import the vgs:
# mkdir /dev/vg01 ;
# mknod /dev/vg01/group c64 0x100000 [Where minor number should be unique]

# vgimport -v -s -m vg01.map vg01

iv) Once vgimport is done , deactivate the vgs & unmount the filesystems of that vg on the source server
and activate the vg on target server:
on target_svr:
# vgchange -a y vg01
Add similar entry like source in /etc/fstab and mount it using: # mount /fs_name #[Where fs_name is the filesystem mount point per fstab. ]

v) repeat this steps (i to iv) for all the vgs, once done, verify that you got all the vgs and filesystems , that were there on the source server. Once verified you can check/start with your pplication/program .

What I don't understand:

You want to decommission a L-class and you bought another L-class as replacement?

However, why not simply transfer the boot disk from one to another?

Your ioscan is most likely from an Integrity server, but not from a RISC server.

Remember, you cannot transfer the OS from Integrity to RISC or vice versa.

Please tell again about source and target.

a) I also have to repeat Torsten's question "why have you bought an obsolete server to replace an obsolete server that you've been order to decommission?"

b) If you mirror the boot disks and both are bootable then pull one and put it into the new server and boot off it. (* forget the whole ignite thing. *)
